The Strongest Case Against the Memory Upcycle

A disciplined review of China capacity, capex acceleration, AI concentration, and the path from shortage to oversupply.

A durable investment thesis should be able to state the strongest evidence against itself. For the current memory upcycle, the principal risks are a faster supply response, demand concentration, and underestimated capacity growth in China.

The timing matters more than the headline. Capacity announcements affect the market only after equipment installation, yield improvement, customer qualification, and volume production. Each step introduces uncertainty, but none should be ignored.

The thesis would weaken materially if supply growth accelerates while hyperscaler capital expenditure slows. Tracking both sides of that equation is more useful than treating every new capacity announcement as immediately bearish.
